Fieldwork Volunteer Position (MRCI)

The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) is a national organisation working to promote justice, empowerment and equality for migrant workers and their families. The MRCI is currently seeking 4 field work volunteers to assist in an exploratory research project on ethnic profiling in Ireland and its impact on migrant workers.

The European Commission Against Racism and Intolerance has defined ethnic profiling as the “use by the police, with no objective and reasonable justification, of grounds such as race, colour, language, religion, nationality or national or ethnic origin, in control, surveillance, or investigative activities.” 

Volunteers will work in pairs of two and will be required to carry out observation in certain areas in order to identify ethnic profiling incidents. The work will be carried out over the period of one week, from 23rd to 29th August, and requires travel via bus and train to Northern Ireland, as well as street observation in Dublin City.  A half day induction session will be provided.

The successful candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • Good understanding of racism and how it operates
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Flexibility
  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team
  • Excellent written and spoken English 
  • An interest in the issues faced by migrant workers in Ireland
  • Previous experience in participatory research desirable

NOTE: This is an unpaid volunteer opportunity; agreed expenses related to the project will be covered.
